If you’re having problems navigating in Logic Pro X, we can help you find your way again. Many professional Logic 9 users haven’t upgraded a year after the release of Logic Pro X. Others who have are still getting tripped up by the new interface and terminology.

Over the last 10 months, this column has covered several of the significant new features like Drummer, Patches, Track Stacks and Smart Controls. This month, however, is about a few changes in your line of sight during basic operation. Hopefully Logic users will agree that it’s easy when you know how Logic Pro 9 versus Logic Pro X. The Library: One of the most notable changes that should have reassured Logic users immediately that the redesign has the pro user’s best interests in mind is the Library’s move from the right to the left side of the Main Window.

This is perhaps the most logical reorganisation in Logic Pro X, placing the Library for shopping for sounds conveniently next to the Inspector channel strip where you can modify the sound. The eye barely needs to move to shift focus between them. Another layout change to the Library, that may at first be disconcerting to the pro user, is the new instrument graphic above the search field.

This is easily fixed by pulling up directly above the search field just under the ‘Library’ label to hide the graphic. You can also swipe down to show the graphic again. Transport: This has been moved up from the bottom of the screen where it has lived since the beginning of Logic time. For those of us who keep the Mac dock on the bottom, it’s a relief to have the two finally out of each other’s way.

No more accidentally opening another app! Given all the navigation is managed at the top of the screen, your eye should adjust fairly easily. Within this window, the primary workspace for your audio and MIDI regions is now called the Tracks area, no longer the Arrange area. Here are two tips for navigating new buttons in the Control Bar at the top of the Main Window. Decimal Tempo: Many Logic Pro 9-turned-X users are tripped up attempting to set a tempo that’s not a whole number.

This is another easy fix:. Instrument Channel Strip: One significant change is that the input field for the software instrument is near the top of the channel strip, no longer above the output field. To select a different patch, click inside the Library and not on the channel strip. If you accidentally click the disclosure triangle to the left of the currently selected channel-strip setting, you’ll close the Library. Track Enable: There’s a new button on the track header that enables and disables the track.

This will be familiar to GarageBand or Pro Tools users. A Logic Pro 9 user may get confused if neither the track or region is muted but it’s not playing back. In this case, the track might be disabled. When the track in enabled, the button turns blue. Unfortunately the caps lock key is not available as a Key Command. However, we can still call it progress: Musical Typing has a few new useful features not possible before with caps lock — you can still operate the sequencer!

Also, pressing the Tab key will sustain notes. The Escape Key: It’s a bit disarming for old-school Logic users to find the Escape key doesn’t access the floating tool menu by default. Good news, it’s easy enough to re-assign in the Key Commands — the function is called Show Tool Menu. This floating tool menu has always been a brilliant workflow for not losing focus, bringing the Tool menu right to wherever your Pointer tool is positioned on the screen.

Loop Browsing: The refreshed Apple Loops Browser has tons of great new loops and a few other noteworthy search additions. Click ‘Loops’ at the top of the Loop Browser to reveal a new menu. In addition to the standard tags, column view and the search field, there are a few new ways to search. Here are a few fixes for commonly encountered problems in Logic Pro X that should help upgrading Logic 9 users. Advanced Tools: Most professional Logic Pro X users have discovered how essential it is to keep Advanced Tools enabled for access to familiar, everyday features of Logic Pro 9.

In fact if something is acting up, especially if you’re working on someone else’s system, that’s the first go-to place to troubleshoot. Just make sure it’s enabled in preferences. Even the Edit button on the EXS24, used to access zone mapping, will go missing if not. Here are some tips for the audio engineer. The button to adjust the waveform scale has been moved up to the upper right of the Main Window and is far more discoverable. It’s just to the left of the vertical and horizontal zoom display.

When audio is selected, there are now two editor tabs: one for the new Track Editor for track-based editing of multiple regions, and one for the File Editor, which is basically the old Sample Editor. Here’s one Audio Preference to look out for which is enabled if Logic Pro X is a fresh install on a Mac without a previous version of Logic. With ‘Input monitoring only for focused track, and record-enabled tracks’ enabled, only the selected focused track will be monitored.

It’s a GarageBand behaviour feature which is useful when, for example, you are recording a drum kit and guitar and only want to hear the guitar. While these changes can seem disorientating to existing users, for the most part you should find Logic ergonomically redesigned and more conducive to an efficient, creative workflow.

Written by Apple. Logic Pro includes a massive collection of instruments, effects, loops and samples, providing a complete toolkit to create amazing-sounding music. What does Logic Pro do? Logic Pro is the most advanced version of Logic ever.

Our download links are from safe sources and are frequently virus scanned to protect you.

Unlike all Logic versions before 9, there is no option to manually show the EXS where to look for the samples. If you are lucky enough to have the original old hard drive you created the samples on, and you are able to somehow connect it to your Mac – it will work.

But copy the folder of samples to your new drive s and it stops working. Lots of long standing bugs have never been fixed in Logic, but with every update new bugs are introduced.

Good luck running a session relying on punching into a track. Zoom settings are having random weird problems. They are all excellent and capable DAWs. However, after using Logic Pro X, it is hard to migrate to any other music software. I find myself able to create music with relative ease that the other DAWs just are not capable of.

The MIDI capabilities alone are second to none in Logic and the ability to compose music in all styles makes it the best of the best. Another huge plus is the constant and free updates Apple provides… updates that are really upgrades in the quality and number of plug-ins and soft instruments built into the program.

Composing music or just recording a band is easy with this software. Whether you are into acoustic, jazz, electronica or rock, this software package is the best there is and gets updated constantly by Apple. Apple takes this software very seriously and I commend them for their excellence.

Version However, it does have on issue now with Flex Pitch and Flex Tim. Total disaster when only trying to use Flex Pitch and not edit the time. When you turn off Flex and Follow, all of your time and pitch corrections disappear.

I just want to use flex. Nothing can fix this. I have been looking in Apple Forums and trying to find a solution for about a week now. The artifacts that now happen when using flex are so bad the audio almost becomes unusable. Toggle navigation Pcmacstore.

In , Apple unveiled the latest iteration of its professional recording software, Logic Pro X. Who is it for? What are the best ways to use it? And what are the pros and cons?

Although all DAWs share some common principles, i. Pro Tools is arguably the most commonly used DAW in professional recording studios. Cubase, on the other hand, is more geared towards PC music production and is predominantly used in schools and home studios. This should is evidence enough to show that the software has scope to produce truly professional, creative results quickly!

The beginner software typically comes installed as standard in all Macs and includes GarageBand. Is Logic Pro X for dummies? Having said this, users have the option of getting the pro software if they want it! Downloadable via the App Store, anyone from more advanced beginners looking to move beyond GarageBand, to professional studio producers can make use of Logic Pro X.

Logic Pro X includes a massive collection of stock plug-ins and plenty of tools for professional songwriting!

Unfortunately, for Windows users, Logic Pro X is not an option. If you search long enough, you can probably find a way around this issue. Yet in all honesty, the main reason for using Apple Mac OS is the seamless integration with the hardware. When one company is in charge of making both the machine and the software, the result is a smooth and efficient process something of a prerequisite when you are trying to be creative!

Like all things computers, this largely depends on your use-case. The kitchen is a good metaphor for understanding how these fit together….

This is where stuff on your computer software, files, everything lives permanently. Audio files are quite big so high RAM capacity is essential if you plan on working on audio projects with lots of large files.

The sharper the knife the better the processor the quicker it can chop the ingredients. So, for audio work and to deliver more power, a good amount of RAM is helpful as it allows you to work with more files 8GB is good, 16GB is better, but the more RAM you have the bigger you can go with your projects.

The better your processor, the more flexibility you have on the software and plug-Ins you may want to use, especially if you are layering multiple effects. If you want to store projects on your hard drive, a large capacity will be useful but you can always archive these onto external hard drives.

So this is perhaps a little less important overall. For really large-scale, high-performance projects, a Mac Pro with a high-quality Thunderbolt Interface would be best. Thunderbolt allows for a much faster data transfer than USB 3, meaning you can edit imported audio with ease, and use lots of plugins without overloading your CPU.

Personally, my recording process tends to be relatively simple. I have a high spec iMac with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface running audio and midi.

The MacBook Pro is certainly capable of producing professional music. It is substantially equipped for recording, songwriting, editing and mixing, and mastering processes! However, I personally prefer to use the iMac as my main workhorse, due to its larger screen. This is a hugely significant change, not only because the old CDs had to be ordered or purchased from an Apple Store and manually installed a much slower procedure , but because the App Store allows customers to easily and remotely update apps across multiple devices.

Logic Pro X updates frequently include new loops, plug-ins, features and performance improvements. And the cost of these updates is… nothing.

Zilch, zip, diddly squat! The slick modern aesthetic of Logic Pro X is a far cry from its predecessors. Featuring a single customizable window view if you have multiple screens, you can also have separate windows for the Mixer, Audio Editor, etc. Navigation is efficient and satisfying, and fairly reminiscent of Final Cut Pro. Included in the new software was also a completely rebuilt sound and loop library for creators to flesh out their recordings with breakbeats, samples, riffs and more.

The Drummer tool is really interesting. It is essentially a modern automatic drum machine, which allows you to select the style, number of fills, the amount of swing and beat complexity to create what feels like a real drummer.

The Smart Tempo feature enables the drummer track to automatically pick up the tempo of another track and play along in time! Songwriters can use this tool to flesh out their demos. This is useful as a temporary solution before the real drums are added.

In terms of the MIDI sound library, Logic Pro X has an enormous array of keyboards and synths and more patches than you could use in a lifetime! I think the most exciting feature is the Logic Remote app, free for iPad and iPhone.

The app connects your iOS device to your computer and allows you to control the software. You can pause, stop and record, obviously. But you can also edit effects and panning, so this is an amazing tool if you like a fader-style mixing approach without actually having the faders, of course. This can also save you a lot of time if you are recording a live instrument, but are too far from your Mac to control it!

The app can also be used to manually tap the project tempo, or play in keyboard and drum instruments. A key concept to understand with Logic Pro X and how it compares to Pro Tools is the approach to plugins. Pro Tools is arguably the most used DAW in the world. It is a very good piece of software and comes with a number of great plugins.

Despite this, in my experience of recording in other studios, a real part of working with Pro Tools is choosing specific 3rd party plugins to really define the kinds of sounds that come out of your studio. And because Pro Tools is the number one DAW in the world, most 3rd party plugins are designed primarily to work with it. The Plug-ins are pretty comprehensive and following the Logic Pro X This means they are very detailed, powerful and sound incredible.

And of course, in classic Apple style, they look great and are super easy to use! In particular, the ChromaVerb reverb allows you to choose your room, set your parameters on decay and even choose how your reverb responds over the frequency spectrum, but also has tons of presets if you need a framework to get you started.

The quality of plug-ins, however, can vary quite a lot. Both of these sound great and are hugely versatile but I have found the Waves plug-ins to be a little less stable than the Vox. Additionally, the visual representation on the Waves is a little less pretty; it feels very much as though perhaps writing the software for Logic Pro X was an afterthought to coding for Pro-Tools.

So my advice would be to get suggestions from other producers or read up on the reviews if you are looking to delve outside of the stock Logic Pro X plugins. Sometimes, a musician in the studio may want to have a few runs at different elements of a song to get the perfect take for each section. In a lot of DAWs, this means recording multiple takes over multiple tracks. With Logic Pro X, however, you can create multiple versions within one track and choose the best bits.

From here you can crossfade together the perfect take all on one track with one set of plugins and one clean track, which makes mixing significantly easier! As with most recording software, you often rely on using buses to process effects to minimize CPU drain on the machine, to ensure everything runs quickly and smoothly.

Applying the same reverb effect to every single guitar, bass and drum track on a song is tedious! A nice touch in Logic Pro X is that when you choose to send a track to a Bus, the Auxiliary channel is automatically created in the Mix window.

This allows you to add any effects you want to it, and name it without having to first create the Bus channel. Then you can assign it and add the effects. I tend to add some effects to the individual tracks — usually EQ and often compression and other specific effects. If you are using MIDI instruments, I would recommend going into the details if you want it to sound as real as possible.

Take some time to adjust the velocity and playing style of each note. This nifty feature allows you to change note velocity and slightly shift the timing. This can make all of the difference with a drum beat or melodic pattern, making it sound less robotic. If you have a passion for unique and vintage instruments like me, this often crosses over and becomes an obsession! This can involve spending a bit of time traveling around to record specific instruments I recently had the opportunity to record a s T Hammond organ that my dad had stowed away in his garage.

Logic provides an amazing solution for situations like this. I was able to simply share the Logic Pro X Project file to my laptop via AirDrop and record the instrument on location! One piece of advice I would offer here would be to share the whole project back to your main working Mac, once you have your new piece of audio in your project. Bear in mind, this can sometimes lead to the machine getting confused and unable to locate it. The best thing to do is solo the track and bounce the raw file of the recorded audio.

You can then drop that into the existing project on your main computer. Generally, most producers record all the audio necessary for a project before they begin adding huge amounts of audio processing.

As an artist that self-produces, I often fall into the trap of building up the sonics of a track during the recording process. Fortunately, the creators of Logic Pro X have got this covered! This effectively by-passes the plugins during recording to stop latency without you having to manually turn each plugin off. Logic can also be installed on all the machines you own, and the Logic Remote is free. Make sure to leave the software open well in advance of the session! The reason for this is as follows.

When you first open Logic Pro X after purchasing it, you must first download all the necessary sound assets. This will take up a big chunk of your storage! My tip would be to never head straight into a session after downloading Logic Pro X to a new machine. Make sure you update the software first.

RIP Skype Classic You will always receive a Skype message stating ‘ You will need to update your OS to Windows 7 or higher to continue using Skype on the same device.

As an technical support guy, info from this site saved me from headache for years, now time for redemption: For those who still need to use winxp willingly or unwillingly, open chrome, install the chrome extention, switch user agent to edge and windows, and you will able to login web skype now. Thank you for sharing. Another way is to change user agent via command line. Stay in touch. I plan to publish detailed instructions soon. That solution works like a charm!

I’m using the agent switcher mentioned below – it allows you to change the agent only on particular domain, so I’ve entered web. Unfortunately, Microsoft has disabled Skype 7 and users cannot use it anymore on any operating systems. I have a problem with the new skype for web which I have thanks to yourselves.

Had to look for something new as I still use windows XP SP3 32 bit and microsoft god bless them have decided that I should not be able to use skype 7 any more. I am signing on using my old skype ident and password. This new skype works perfectly well in audio only BUT for video whenever some one tries to call me on video and I press the video icon top right of the new skype screen and without colour they are cut off.

The same happens when I call them. I have just been through your software requirements and I think I meet them all although I am unsure about the Windows Installer 4. I am using the latest possible Chrome browser for Windows XP which is the one you specify. What am I doing wrong please? I have since downloaded level 4.

Could THAT have been the problem? I just was able to have a hour long conversation with my brother in New Zealand I am in Spain but could not get the video to work at all no matter what buttons I pressed, I could get a whole live screen of myself! Everything else seems normal skype stuff.

Hello David! Video calls on Windows XP are working only for web-to-web calls. That is, it won’t work if your brother don’t use Skype for Web. They really are apalling. In fact, it does not officially support Windows XP, so this does not surprise me. As I already wrote, no one can guarantee neither proper work nor long-term support. Hi, My skype is not connecting can you tell how to connect. Add new comment Comments are moderated by the administrator and cannot immediately appear on the site.

There are a myriad of features common to both, and certain areas that each excels in over the other one. So if you’re new to producing, familiar with one program, or both, hopefully you’ll find our comparison useful and you might learn a thing or two!

Later, the company was bought by Apple in , so Logic then officially became an Apple Product. Now a Mac only program, which was originally available as a boxed application, it is only available as a digital download from the Mac App Store. It takes the basic concepts of Logic and allows users to experiment in a stripped down version of the software. It’s great for kids or beginners, or if you’re just making songs with loops who hasn’t done this with Garageband?

Due to Logic being an Apple exclusive, if you’re running Windows , your options stop here unfortunately. While Ableton Live supports both platforms, Logic sadly does not.

Starting its life in as a DAW and software sequencer, Live – made by German company Ableton – is the most popular DAW in the world for electronic music producers, many varying surveys have been done, and Ableton always seems to come out on top.

Built to function in a similar way to all other DAWs, Ableton contains all the features you’d expect to allow users to create, record, compose and produce music. However, it’s also bundled with a whole host of features that make Live essentially an instrument for performing live or DJing.

Live’s built in engine essentially acts in a similar way to a Loop pedal, and it also includes tools for beat matching, cross fading and other performance based effects. But more on this later. Live comes in three iterations. Intro , Standard and Suite. For a more comprehensive look into what makes Ableton so unique, check out our other article here. There are a whole host of DAWs on the market, so there are a lot of questions to consider when comparing or considering one for your own use.

If you’re making electronic music to be performed , for example, Ableton Live is the best choice by a mile. If you’re more focused on recording instruments and getting to use lots of technical plug ins , maybe Logic is the way to go.

Straight off the bat, if you’re going in blind with no former knowledge of the two, there’s no getting away from the fact that Logic is much better value for money than Ableton, because it’s cheaper, and comes bundled with everything you need. That’s over double the price, and then some. It’s an unfortunate reality that Music Production can be an expensive hobby with some plug ins alone costing in the hundreds but if you’re serious about making it work, that won’t stop you. However, if you aren’t sure, or if budget is not an issue, read on to check out exactly what sets these two DAWs apart from each other, and which one is right for you.

This is probably the most fundamental question you need to ask yourself when trying to decide which program suits your needs best. If you know exactly what you need from a DAW, you’re better prepared to choose one.

If your workflow takes the form of building a track in an arrangement , delving into sound design and composition , then Logic is for you. If you’re a musician who records acoustic instruments , vocals or live drums , then the ability to comp, edit, track and record audio are an essential part of your arsenal. Logic lets you do this with ease, whereas these features are sadly pretty much nonexistent in Ableton. That’s not to say that Live doesn’t allow you to record audio, just that if you are wanting something more akin to a studio environment, where you can record multiple takes onto one track, splice and edit the audio together efficiently , then Logic excels here and Ableton falls short.

Having said that, the two flagship DAWs are constantly tweaking and subtly borrowing ideas from each other when they release updates, so who knows where Live’s audio editing functionality will be in the future? While the previous section may seem to put Logic in the lead, there are more things to consider. If performing your music is part of your goal, then Ableton is the choice for you. Live is unique because as well as having the traditional DAW features in its Arrangement View , it also comes with Session View, a unique environment in which you can employ a totally different song writing approach.

Building loops , and hearing them in real time is what Ableton’s tools lend themselves to most effectively. When paired with Ableton’s Push controllers, Live becomes a performance instrument , which can be used in either context; jamming out a song idea , or performing in a live situation.

This is why Live is so popular with electronic music producers, as genres such as House or Techno , which are progression based and largely focused on looping parts building on top of each, are so easy and intuitive to create within Live’s environment. Live also offers extensive mapping to MIDI controllers, allowing pretty much any parameter from any plug in to be mapped to a control surface such as Ableton’s own Push or Push 2 , but third party controllers also work.

This allows control down to a minute detail on many elements of a song’s performance, and there’s no limit to how creative you can be with effects when it comes to this level of customisation with MIDI programming and assignment. Even DJs use Live. The audio snycing and beat matching is where Ableton’s skills also shine.

It has complex audio analysis and warping tools, allowing you to select and create transient markers , to ensure that the audio you’re working with is perfectly in time with your project. This is what makes using Live as a DJ tool possible, you can drag a full song onto a single clip, and ensure the beat is locked with the BPM of your Live session. Using Ableton’s built in performance effects and tools , you can create a full DJ set up within Live’s environment.

Adding songs to individual clips , and creating a full line up of songs for a DJ set is entirely possible. While Apple does offer Mainstage , designed to be a live performance app and often seen as companion to Logic , for a live performance context, you can’t beat the functionality and customisation levels available in Ableton Live.

So if you’re an artist with a clear view to being able to perform your music in a live setting, Ableton is the winner here for its unique performance oriented features. Logic uses a layout that anyone who has previously used Pro Tools or Cubase would be familiar with. Each DAW mentioned shares an area for arranging on a timeline horizontally, and a separate mixer for balancing your tracks volume, panning, FX, sends etc.

Live , on the other hand, while sharing an Arrangement View , can be confusing if you’re only used to using the aforementioned DAWs. The Session View is Live’s unique feature, and if you don’t think you’d use it, sticking with Logic Pro would be the best bet.

Ableton’s Session View is so unique because it is a non-linear work space, visually arranged similar to Logic’s mixer but with Clips arranged vertically and Scenes arranged horizontally. A Clip contains one part or element of a track. This section allows you to improvise and promotes building your track as a loop. A clip will loop infinitely if you leave it playing, so if your approach to songwriting is building on ideas in real time , you can do this. Then when you’re finished, you can switch over to Arrangement View and create the song’s full arrangement in a more traditional timeline sense.

For a comprehensive comparison of Ableton’s Session View, check out our article here which takes a closer look at Ableton’s interface. If you’re less of a songwriter and more of an engineer or a technically minded producer, Logic has a boutique of plug ins that are perfect when it comes to Mixing and Mastering your tracks. There are even argument for Logic’s audio engine sounding better. Though these are largely an issue of taste preference. There’s definitely a difference between them, but is it enough to set one apart as an industry standard and the other as sub par?

Not really. Something to consider though, is that many producers myself included have found themselves producing a track in Ableton, and then moving over to Logic for a more comprehensive mixing and mastering process.

While Ableton may lend itself well to particular composition scenarios , Logic comes out ahead when it comes to Mixing and Mastering. Bottom line, if you’re mastering, you want to be doing it in Logic. While you can master in Live , and if you don’t own Logic Pro, you absolutely should , if you have access to Logic, you can’t beat the complex tools and analysers that help in a Mastering context.

As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, there’s no clear answer to the age old and often argued about question is Logic or Ableton the better DAW? While Ableton may come out on top on many polls , you could argue that that’s just because it’s supported on both Mac and Windows , while Logic is only a Mac app. This may affect results of polls because of how many people have access to each program, so it’s worth bearing in mind.

You should never pay any attention if someone is blatantly shouting about how one is better than the other. It’s entirely subjective. At the end of the day, there are a lot of various elements to consider, and the most important thing is knowing yourself what kind of a producer you are, and what your needs are when it comes to music production software. Hopefully you gained something from this comparison of Logic Pro and Ableton Live.

Stay tuned for more content, and check out the rest of Top Music Arts’ posts, templates, tutorials and more! Cart 0. Ableton Live Starting its life in as a DAW and software sequencer, Live – made by German company Ableton – is the most popular DAW in the world for electronic music producers, many varying surveys have been done, and Ableton always seems to come out on top.

Intro is targeted at the hobbyist musician market. It lacks a large amount of the full version of the software’s capabilities. Standard has no limitations on track amounts, and offers a great many of the features of the full software. These are 12 Send and Return tracks, as well as input and output channels. Suite , as the name may give away, is a full music production suite. Live Suite encompasses a complete integrated studio, giving you everything you need for Music Production.

What should you consider when you’re comparing DAWs? What do I want to get out of my DAW? What features are essential to me? What type of music will I be making? Am I going to be performing my music, or just recording? Price point. Obviously if budget is a consideration for you, there seems a clear choice.

What type of musician are you? Are you purely a Writer or a Performer as well? What’s your history with DAWs? If your focus is on Mixing and Mastering The point is, great music can be and is made in both DAWs. Verdict As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, there’s no clear answer to the age old and often argued about question is Logic or Ableton the better DAW?

If you use lots of loops and produce EDM exclusively, Logic might be a better tool for you. Otherwise, I think DP is better in every other aspect. That is a very powerful combo!! We have some members here who use both apps, so hopefully they’ll chime in.

Mac Mini Server i7 2. Hence, what is not surrounded by uncertainty cannot be the truth. I use both, but primarily use DP. If you’re already on Logic, and thinking about another DAW, it would help to understand why so we can help you explore the options. MacPro5,1 , six core 2 x 3. I use DP if I have a simple choice, but from watching how others work, I think the preference depends a lot on what sort of work you’re doing, and which one can most easily and quickly do what you want.

A few things I experience on a regular basis: – Logic is cheap and everywhere, everyone can do something with it, and third party stuff will work with it more often with the exceptions noted below. I think the sounds are excellent given the price. That could change with the next Logic X. Logic has some clunky workarounds. I doubt anyone at Apple has ever helped a Logic user with a problem. You’re pretty much dependent on experienced users on forums. That matters a lot if you’re working with it all day.

I’ve heard people argue the opposite, so there may be ways of working in which Logic is better suited, but for musicians who are trying to get phrases to sound musical and ensembles to gel, DP’s tools are indispensable. If you record free performances and then adjust the bar lines and beats to line up with the performance, DP is more precise and easier to work with. I searched for a year for the method I was looking for in Logic, finally realizing that it’s just not there.

What is there Logic’s beat adjustment is barely satisfactory, but I’d hate to use it every day. Logic blurs the distinction between tracks. That makes it simple for the first time user to play something and hear a sound, but it complicates advanced templates, at least for me.

That’s four kinds of tracks, and I prefer to group them in certain ways and route them in certain ways, and it just works better if those stay separate. There may be ways around it in Logic if you want separate tracks, but I don’t know what they are.

DP is more likely to have a lot of information editable in a single window, such that multiple tracks, notes, and controllers can be compared and aligned. To accomplish the same tasks in Logic sometimes requires opening more windows which may not line up the information between them. I keep these at full screen, each in their own “desktop” or “Space,” using Mission Control to move them there at the beginning of a session.

While I sometimes use other windows for special purposes, They are interrelated: a selection in one selects the same data in all, and an edit in one is reflected in all. Essential Mixing Board controls are duplicated in the edit windows to prevent having to change windows to record enable, solo, adjust volume, and other things.

This is very handy, as is having a channel strip available in the main Consolidated Window. That means that with a click you can change the entire look of DP’s interface. Light, Dark, red, green, neon, subdued Very nice for changing the look for on-stage use. I don’t know if Apple has added that to Logic. DP has a search feature that I’ve never seen anywhere else. It helps to find certain data quickly, and you can store your searches for re-use. Neither app is perfect, and a competent Logic user could probably make a list of things that Logic does “better” than DP, but in the end it comes down to preferences, and DP simply does things in a way that is familiar and comfortable to me, thus my bias.

But some of the things above are real deal-killers for Logic and me. The two apps are very different, though. Switching between them is not like switching cameras or word processors. They are completely different ways of working. It’s probably significant to mention that a lot of film score composers would be lost without DP.

It is one of the oldest DAWs for film scoring, and has co-developed along with the industry. DP is excellent for syncing up with external hardware such as cameras, mixing boards, ADAT machines, and other digital devices. One other important thing for me, probably less so for someone starting out, is that I can open files all the way back to or , when I first started using DP.

Very few applications can boast that kind of retro-compatibility. And I have tons of files dating back that far.

Why sequence something again if I did it 25 years ago? It’s safe to say that which ever you choose, you’ll still be learning new tricks after 10 years of using it.

They are deep apps with lots of options. Good luck in figuring out what you want. OfftheRoad got the deluxe treatment by some of the boards powerhouse DP users. Perhaps when folks now search “Digital Performer Vs Logic Pro” they’ll be directed to this great info.

Thanks, all. RMBP 2. Sometimes they are quite small, almost too small. It’s not a showstopper, but hopefully something that gets some attention in their next release. Logic doesn’t have a meter bridge. It gives you fixed short and narrow meters on it’s mixer.

As a guitar player, I first tested this out by drawing a triangle shape over some not-so-well-executed finger vibrato notes. The results were “unholy” – DP gives you the best set of automation drawing tools. DP
